Why Filming M. Night Shyamalans Glass Was Different Than Split, According To Anya Taylor-Joy
If there's one thing that director/writer M. Night Shyamalan is known for, it's unexpected plot twists. Starting most famously with The Sixth Sense, every Shyamalan flick has had at least one major WTF moment for moviegoers. But not even the most experienced fan theorists could have predicted the end of 2016's Split. Because in the final moments of the film, it was revealed to be connected to Shyamalan's 2000 movie Unbreakable, teasing next year's dual sequel Glass. Actress Anya Taylor-Joy will be reprising her Split role as Casey Cooke-- although its unclear exactly how. Taylor-Joy recently spoke to the difference in filming Glass, which has major stars like Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson.
With Split, there was a giant sense of adventure and discovery. We were making something different, and it was weird and everything was so intense. There was a real sense of adventure with Split, whilst with Glass, it felt so epic. Every single day, everyone was so happy to be there because we were aware that we were making cinematic history. That's a big deal. And then, you see Sam [Jackson] in his costume. I'm a true fangirl, so I was just like, 'Oh, my god, that's Elijah Price! That's crazy! And I'm in a scene with him. That's nuts!' I think we were all just so excited to be a part of it, and all very grateful to be a part of something so monumental.
While Anya Taylor-Joy is still playing the same character in Glass, the experience isn't quite the same with the highly anticipated crossover film. Split was a relatively quiet operation, with not even Taylor-Joy aware of its connection to Unbreakable during filming and post-production. It wasn't until the film was screening that Shyamalan revealed the plot twist to the young actress, as well as the plan for Glass' conception.
Anya Taylor-Joy's comments to Collider about Glass' epic nature certainly makes sense, given what we've seen from the upcoming blockbuster. The trailer finally premiered at this year's San Diego Comic-Con, revealing the trio of leading characters (played by Bruce Willis, James McAvoy, and Samuel L. Jackson) are actually patients in a mental facility. While being tended to by Sarah Paulson's newcomer Dr. Ellie Staple, it should be fascinating to see how they all interact with each other, and when chaos will ensue when The Beast returns to feast.
Casey Cooke is present during a few brief shots of Glass' trailer, but it's unclear how the character will enter the movie's narrative. After returning to High School, she eventually makes it to the facility where James McAvoy's Kevin is being held. Despite her near death experience, she seem to display some empathy for Kevin during her visit.
