Will Christopher McQuarrie Return To Direct Mission: Impossible 7?

Mission: Impossible -- Fallout is yet another huge movie in the massive franchise. This, of course, leads to the single most obvious question in all of Hollywood, what's the plan for the sequel? At this point, for director Christopher McQuarrie, there might be the beginning of a plan, as he says he might have an idea for a Mission: Impossible 7, though he says he'll need some time to rest before he contemplates coming back himself. According to McQuarrie...

[Fallout editor] Eddie Hamilton, every day in the editing room was like, 'Come on, man, it's obviously a trilogy you're coming back, you have to finish it, you didn't kill Lane,' and I was like, 'It's somebody else's problem.' Tom has asked, the studio has asked, and I was like, 'You know maybe I've got an idea for...' and then the reviews came out and I was like, 'Get outta here. Just stop.' I felt so bad for the director of Mission 6 and I feel even worse of the director of 7. I'd rather have leprosy than be in the position of the person having to confront the pressure of the hyperbole of this movie on their first day of shooting the film. It's too much to confront. I'd need a long nap before I could contemplate it.

While Christopher McQuarrie does seem to be kicking the can down the road with the Empire Film Podcast regarding whether or not he would return to direct the next sequel. It does sound like he's at least potentially interested. He says he may have an idea for another film, and he also says that he would feel bad for whatever director might come along to make the next movie. He apparently felt that way last time, and ended up doing it himself. The only way he's not going to put another director in the terrible position of trying to follow him, is to follow himself.

While we've now had six Mission: Impossible movies, only the last two have really been directly connected. The first four movies were very much, "the continuing adventures of Ethan Hunt" but if you somehow skipped over Mission: Impossible -- Rogue Nation then you walked into Fallout missing some information, as the new movie follows directly on the events that came before.

Most of that related information focuses on the character named Solomon Lane played by Sean Harris, and as the editor of Mission: Impossible -- Fallout apparently pointed out, Lane is still very much alive and very much a villain.

It seems like a foregone conclusion that Mission: Impossible 7 is going to happen. They still make a lot of money and the lead actor gets to do amazing stunts that he enjoys. The only questions are when will this movie happen, who will be the one that comes up with the story and amazing stunts, and who will direct Tom Cruise on his next mission?
