Brad Bird Hopes He'll Never Have To Explain How The Incredibles Got Their Powers

The superhero origin story tends to be a pretty important step on a character's journey. Spider-Man gets bit by a radioactive spider. Daredevil takes a blast of radioactive materials to the face, causing his blindness -- but amplifying his senses. And Bruce Wayne loses his parents, then adopts the symbol of the bats that terrify him. The Incredibles, though, don't have a traditional origin story. When we meet Elastigirl (Holly Hunter), Mr. Incredible (Craig T. Nelson) and the rest of the Parr family in the 2004 film, they already have their abilities. So when CinemaBlend traveled to Pixar's campus for an exclusive conversation with Incredibles 2 helmer Brad Bird, we asked him how the "Supers" in this franchise get their powers, and he admitted:

I don't know. You may have just created Incredibles 3. I mean, it doesn't really matter to me, you know. The sort of 'classic Marvel thing,' somebody spills a test tube or something and then somebody's got a superpower. I don't know. I think that in my mind, it's a little more natural than that. If we have a baby with superpowers, that means they can be born, I guess. So, it's probably not the toxic spill thing. Although, I wouldn't say that every superhero in this universe is naturally created. Maybe there are some toxic spills in there. I don't know. Hopefully I won't ever have to explain it.

The question seemed to catch Brad Bird off guard, as if he hadn't ever contemplated how his incredible characters acquired their incredible powers. In fact, in a different part of our conversation, Bird confirmed that the powers aren't really all that important to him, and that The Incredibles and its pending sequel, Incredibles 2, was always more focused on family than it was on superheroes. The comic-book nature of the Parr clan just gave Bird and his team of genius animators an avenue into exploring the difficulties of a family dynamic, and it doesn't sound like that emphasis is going to change heading into Incredibles 2.

Still, we have reported that there will be more superheroes on display in Incredibles 2 than just the Parr family and Frozone (Samuel L. Jackson). Our visit to Pixar on behalf of Incredibles 2 unearthed the existence of The Wannabes, super-powered beings who have been in hiding for years because of the government oversight that has made heroes illegal. This is still an issue when Brad Bird's Incredibles 2 opens, but because of the emergence of Elastigirl (Holly Hunter) as a triumphant, heroic figure, these characters leave the shadows and try to re-establish themselves into the world.

But according to Brad Bird, we probably won't learn that much about their origin stories either... though I think, for a few minutes, we had him thinking about it.

Incredibles 2 opens in theaters on June 15. It brings the Parr family back into the spotlight, and introduces a few new antagonists. Have you grabbed your tickets yet?

X-Men Producer Simon Kinberg Understands The Gambit Worries

X-Men Producer Simon Kinberg Understands The Gambit Worries

The X-Men franchise has had a long life in the theaters, but it hasn't been without missteps. And while R-rated movies like Deadpool and Logan have found massive success, Fox's next three releases have each been pushed back a few times. No blockbuster is quite as guilty of this as Channing Tatum's Gambit, which has been delayed more times than you can shake a kinetically charged stick at. Many hardcore cinephiles and Marvel fans have all but given up on the Gambit movie at this point, and producer Simon Kinberg seems to understand that experience. In fact, he shared the cynicism-- despite knowing the inner workings of the franchise. As he tells it,

So Gambit became something different over the span of developing it with Channing, with his partner Reid [Carolin], with Josh Zetumer the screenwriter. It is something that we intend to make but listen I'm Jewish, so my expectation for everything is I don't believe anything until it's out in movie theaters. So I share your cynicism generally, but in this particular case we're working very hard to get the movie going.

While making a joke about his own insecurities and personal background, Simon Kinberg does seem to level with the fans here. Gambit has had an extremely rocky road to development, with no end in sight. So fans who don't think the project will ever happen certainly have cause.

Simon Kinberg's comments to Collider show how in flux the X-Men franchise as a whole is, and how the folks at 20th Century Fox are a bit more flexible than one would think. While running the X-Men franchise for nearly two decades is a massive undertaking, the studio seems to be flying by the seat of their pants in some ways. Just look at the most recent set of delays, as Dark Phoenix takes Gambit's release date, The New Mutants was delayed, and Channing Tatum's movie was left in development hell.

The fans' trepidation toward Gambit show one way that the superhero genre has changed in the past few years. Because until a blockbuster is actually shot and in the can, there's no guarantee that previously announced projects will come to fruition. Gambit is a great example of this, as are a variety of DC's previously announced movies that have no release date or production schedule. There's still no guarantee the Gambit movie will ever actually make it to theaters, although Simon Kinberg makes it clear that the studio is very much keeping it in mind.

Of course, Simon Kinberg also addresses the possibility that Gambit might never make it to theaters, as he'd just as cynical as the rest of us. And with Disney and Fox's merger looming in the background, the clock seems to be ticking.

Simon Kinberg's directorial debut Dark Phoenix will arrive in theaters on June 7th, 2019. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Everything Wrong With Bird Box Video Takes Aim At Its Inconsistencies

Everything Wrong With Bird Box Video Takes Aim At Its Inconsistencies

Bird Box was one of those movies that energized social media, so you can be sure CinemaSins was going to have some fun with it. The new video takes a long look at the film and, of course, can't help but point out everything it sees as not making sense within the supernatural thriller. Check it out.

Bird Box follows Sandra Bullock as she attempts to survive a world that has been overrun by invisible creatures that force those that see them to kill themselves. While that premise alone is certainly more than a little crazy, and exactly the sort of thing that CinemaSins loves to tear into, Bird Box has been an incredibly popular movie, spawning social media trends and endless memes.

Beyond a doubt, the biggest issue that CinemaSins has with Bird Box surrounds the rules regarding how the movie's monsters work. One character sees one while driving but the woman sitting next to her does not. Most everybody who does see one then begins to take steps to kill themselves, but one character does not. The rules, such as they are, seem to be pretty flexible to meet whatever the film requires of them, changing as necessary.

Though, the point about the difficulty in rowing a boat or driving a car while blindfolded, and the fact that you'll naturally veer off course, is a valid point as well.

From there, it's the pretty standard litany of complaints as to why certain characters behave in certain ways. More often than not, the answer is "because if they didn't the movie would be over." It's not always the best explanation, but this is fiction after all.

Generally speaking the reviews of Bird Box have been positive, so most critics didn't have all these issues with the film. Having said that, some did call out the movies for overly contrived and forced elements.

While the response to Bird Box may be mixed, one thing is for sure, a lot of people have opinions because a lot of people saw the movie. The film set Netflix records for viewership that have been confirmed by Nielsen. One upside to the fact that Netflix is fairly cheap and easy to obtain is that a lot of people have it and use so when something new comes along, it ends up getting watched by audiences on par with big screen hits.

Of course, for Netflix that level of success translated to endless memes and people taking part in what became known as the Bird Box challenge, which saw people attempt to accomplish simple tasks while blindfolded. It went about as well as you might expect. Especially the people who tried to drive cars. That went exactly how you'd expect.
