Fantastic Beasts Can Actually Learn Something From the Star Wars Prequels

Fantastic Beasts Can Actually Learn Something From the Star Wars Prequels

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald SPOILERS to follow. Also for the Star Wars prequels, if you live under a rock.

Harry Potter is one of the most successful properties in pop culture, so it's no surprise that Warner Bros. wanted to keep the good times rolling after the eight-part film series concluded. Thus came Fantastic Beasts, a five-part prequel series that delivered its second film earlier this month. Unfortunately, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and this prequel franchise haven't really captured the magic of Harry Potter. That's not too different from another prequel series for a massively popular franchise: Star Wars.

The Star Wars prequel trilogy is famous, and not for all the right reasons. The films were hated by fans when they first came out thanks to bad writing, acting and directing that made the movies a slog. As time has gone forward, the vitriol for these prequels has died down considerably (check out the PrequelMemes subreddit to see what I mean), but that doesn't change the fact that there are lessons to be learned from these movies. The prequel trilogy did good and bad things, and it wouldn't be a terrible idea for Fantastic Beasts to take a page or two from Star Wars on how to avoid the biggest missteps.

Do Something NewGeorge Lucas made a lot of questionable decisions when it came to the making of his Star Wars prequels, but he wasn't content to do more of the same. Every prequel introduces something new, whether its vehicles, planets, characters or alien races. The prequels rarely retreaded old ground, seldom taking anything from the original films that it didn't need. While Fantastic Beasts isn't too riddled in nostalgia, it can stand to broaden its scope a bit.

We're only on the second movie, and we were already back at Hogwarts. The films introduce plenty of new magical creatures and characters, but many of those characters are tied to the original movies (we'll get to that). How many new spells have we seen or magical locations that weren't a government building? It creates a lot more excitement when fans are exploring new territory.

Develop The Love StoryOne of the biggest complaints about the Star Wars prequels is the romance between Anakin and Padme. The problem is that it's so poorly written, so wooden and so unbelievable. There's a lot of plot placed on the shoulders of this romance, but it falls short in just about every way. Fantastic Beasts does not depend on the budding relationship between Newt and Tina, but they are clearly being pushed together and it's falling flat.

The Crimes of Grindelwald doesn't devote enough time to develop the romance to make the audience care. Star Wars had the opposite problem. There was a lot of time dedicated to Anakin and Padme (there was a whole scene of frolicking through grass), but it was so cheesy and it didn't sell WHY these two are falling in love. If Fantastic Beasts wants to couple Tina and Newt or Jacob and Quennie, then it has to do the work and explain why these people should be together.

Don't Put Too Much Emphasis On Family LineageIt's easy to understand the impulse of trying to connect the prequel with the original, but it is possible to go too far. Fantastic Beasts does this partly by including Harry Potter characters like McGonagall or Nagini, but it loses itself in the question of Credence's family. So much time and energy are spent on explaining who Credence truly is, which apparently means whatever powerful magical family he's from. This is meant to give the film a big twist to take us into the rest of the franchise, but it feels unnecessary.

Star Wars almost revolves entirely around the Skywalker clan, but in the prequels, Palpatine doesn't really care about Anakin's name. He just wants him because he's super strong in the Force and he's a dummy that can be manipulated. If anything, Harry Potter is about how family is the people you surround yourself with, not whose blood you have, which makes it odd that Fantastic Beasts obsesses over the latter.

Don't Give One Person All The Creative PowerGeorge Lucas was overseeing almost every element about the Star Wars prequels. He wrote, directed and produced each of the three films, and had full creative control. Lucas is the master of all things Star Wars and it makes you wonder if anyone ever actually said no to him during the making of these three movies. How else do you get movies about trade disputes or lines about how bad sand is? The guy had free reign! In some cases, this worked out, but more often then not, people need someone to check their work.

Fantastic Beasts is in a similar boat with J.K. Rowling. No one knows more about Harry Potter than Rowling and she's writing the script for each Fantastic Beasts movie. However, these movies aren't quite vibing the way Harry Potter did. Writing a script isn't the same as writing a full novel, and there's a lot that can happen to a script from the page to the screen, but I think the same principle that people should be questioning those in power still applies.

Broaden The WorldOne thing that Star Wars and Harry Potter have in common is that they take place in worlds with endless possibilities. You could tell literally any kind of story within those franchises and it doesn't even have to revolve around the main character. The prequels did a good job at this because it took what people knew about the original films and expanded them. Fans learned how the Jedi Council worked and what the universe was like when Jedi were still around. It was illuminating, but Fantastic Beasts hasn't quite pulled that off.

It was interesting to see how the American Wizarding World is different from the one we know, but it pretty much stopped there. Part of the challenge is that Harry Potter is set in the "real world," so it's harder to go to fantastical locations as Star Wars can. Still, there's plenty of material that Fantastic Beasts can explore, and the franchise shouldn't box itself in.

How Much Money Rocketman Might Make On Its Opening Weekend

How Much Money Rocketman Might Make On Its Opening Weekend

When Bryan Singer was fired, director Dexter Fletcher came aboard Bohemian Rhapsody to steer the film into port. That Freddie Mercury biopic wound up becoming a historic success, and now Dexter Fletcher is back with another musical icon for Rocketman. The Elton John biopic arrives at the end of the month and is currently looking to launch with $20 million.

Rocketman is tracking at a $20 million opening weekend, but according to The Hollywood Reporter, some are predicting that it could enjoy a slightly higher liftoff with $25 million. Either end of that range would be a solid, respectable opening for the Taron Egerton-fronted film, even if it wouldnt blast the film into the stratosphere in its opening weekend.

Of the new releases opening May 31, a debut of $20-$25 million would likely put Rocketman behind Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which is currently tracking to open in the low $50 million range. Godzilla may win the weekend crown, but Rocketman does provide an interesting bit of counterprogramming for those not interested in the MonsterVerse.

Last years Bohemian Rhapsody opened in first place with over $50 million and went on to make $216.4 million in North America and over $900 million globally. Although not a biopic, Bradley Coopers A Star is Born also provides a relevant comparison. That Oscar-snubbed film opened in second place opposite Venom with $42.9 million and went on to basically match Bohemian Rhapsody domestically with $215.3 million and a great, but less crazy impressive $434.2 million worldwide.

So Rocketman doesnt look like it will open quite as big as those two music films. Its also opening at the beginning of the more cutthroat summer season, but $20+ million would still be solid, and as is proven what seems like every other month, tracking is inexact and things can change. Bohemian Rhapsody was tracking in the mid-$30 million range before it rocked the box office to a much bigger opening.

We dont yet know what kind of buzz Rocketman will enjoy come release time that could affect its opening weeknd. Bohemian Rhapsody received mixed reviews, but Rami Maleks performance as Freddie Mercury was praised as worth the price of admission. That film also benefitted from the amount of play Queens music still enjoys.

Elton John is no niche, indie artist though, and his recognizable tunes can only help Rocketman. Dexter Fletchers film also features a lead performance in Taron Egerton as Elton John that could stir up some buzz since the actor does all of his own singing for the role.

Rocketman debuts at the Cannes Film Festival on May 15 and Fandango is hosting advance screenings of the movie on May 18. So well have a better idea around then of what the word is on the quality of the movie. But the mere fact that advance screenings are happening so close to the world premiere and two weeks prior to the theatrical release date is hopefully a display of confidence in the film.

Rocketman blasts into theaters on May 31. Check out our 2019 Release Schedule to keep track of all the movies youll want to see this summer.

6 Ways The MCU Could Bring Back The Red Skull

6 Ways The MCU Could Bring Back The Red Skull

It seems as though Marvel has a plan for Red Skull, and while no one seems to know what that is, the fact that Hugo Weaving was asked to return as the character has many people speculating. Should Marvel be planning on bringing Red Skull back via the MCU, here are some of the ways it could do it, as well as some of the reasons why his re-inclusion would be beneficial to the brand.

As A Free Man Who Can Do What He WantsShould Red Skull return to the MCU, it's already confirmed he'll no longer be bound to the will of the Soul Stone. The Russo's confirmed that once Thanos obtained the Stone, Red Skull was free to leave Vormir and do whatever he wants, free from its influence. This includes pursuing an Infinity Stone if he should so choose, provided he's willing to roll the dice again on a potential banishment.

Of course, we're talking about an exiled super-Nazi who's been enslaved by sentient Stones for several decades, so it's not like his options are completely open to doing a ton outside the world of villainy. The Russos' specific mention that Red Skull could pursue an Infinity Stone seem to strongly hint that he will, likely to fulfill his long-held dream of world domination. Who knows though, he might shock everyone and chill on a remote island until this all blows over.

As A Villain With Powers From The Soul StoneRed Skull's appearance in Avengers: Infinity War was quite a shock, especially considering he seemed far removed from the man he was in Captain America. While he's no longer cursed to stay on Vormir, it's possible some of the powers granted to him remained post-freedom. The details of what those powers may be are a bit foggy, but he was able to know Gamora and Thanos before they introduced themselves.

Red Skull also gained some humility from his 70 years as a prisoner of the Soul Stone, and while that's technically not a power, it's something he desperately needed. A self-aware Red Skull with a checked ego may help him better achieve his goals for world domination and make fewer mistakes the next time a hero tries to stop him. That's a dangerous thought considering the impact his return may have on the world, especially now of all times.

As Pre-Serum Johann SchmidtJust because Hugo Weaving wasn't down for a return as Red Skull in Avengers: Infinity War doesn't mean he doesn't stand a chance of returning in Avengers 4. With time travel rumored to be an element in the film, all it would take is a scene around World War II or prior to incorporate Johann Schmidt in some way.

That's a big if, of course, as Ross Marquand stepping in to portray the villain could mean that Hugo Weaving is done with that character. That's not so problematic for present-day and future storylines involving Red Skull, but would almost certainly mean he won't be appearing with his original face, a.k.a. the face he shares with Weaving. We'll just have to wait and see what happens and whether Avengers 4 would even need to feature Weaving's Red Skull persona.

As An Asset To The AvengersRed Skull may be a key asset to the Avengers in Avengers 4. His time as a servant to the Soul Stone could've given him some valuable information regarding how that and the other Infinity Stones work, as well as secrets behind how they can be utilized to reverse what happened in Avengers: Infinity War. Red Skull could offer up the information at a price, or perhaps be "persuaded" by a hero not willing to negotiate with a Nazi.

He might even offer up information without a struggle, as those decades spent as a wraith really appeared to mellow him out. Of course, we're not expecting him to flip sides and be a reformed good guy, but perhaps Red Skull may understand that in helping the Avengers, he's furthering his own personal interests and keeping them off his back. Meanwhile, he can work on his comeback uninterrupted and be back more powerful than ever before anyone can stop him.

As The Villain That Is Keeping Chris Evans From RetiringAfter what feels like a solid year of mourning his inevitable retirement, MCU fans were blindsided by the recent news that Chris Evans might not be done with the role after all. That's great news, especially with the revelation that his greatest foe is free from his obligations to the Soul Stone and able to do as he pleases.

That and the fact that Red Skull's age was frozen in his prime feels like Marvel is setting the stage for he and Cap to clash again. Whether that goes down in Avengers 4 or another new Captain America film is another story and what expert Marvel theorists are trying to figure out. Red Skull coming back to the MCU in a meaningful way is a delightful treat, but in another movie to square off with Cap? That's the dream.

As A Villain For Bucky And SamRemember that Winter Soldier and Falcon limited series headed to Disney+? In the case that Captain America does die and Red Skull is on the loose, it kind of makes sense the burden of capturing him would fall on these two. Red Skull's return to Earth might just pave the way for whatever premise this project has in store and give these two heroes a thrilling adventure to tackle on streaming.

Anything's possible, and it might be why Disney tapped Ross Marquand to replace Hugo Weaving as opposed to just letting the character fade into obscurity. Obviously there's a plan for Red Skull, so even if his presumed presence in Avengers 4 is fast and fleeting and Chris Evans does end up retiring as Captain America, keep in mind this is always an avenue in which the villain could return for a longer adventure.

MCU fans eager to share ways they think Red Skull could be reintroduced into the franchise need do nothing more than share their thoughts in the comments below. Meanwhile, we at CinemaBlend are still waiting for the big Avengers 4 trailer release. For more on that, get some analysis on the wait and when it could arrive from Managing Director Sean O'Connell.

I can't see how Red Skull wouldn't return. He's the Joker to Cap's Batman, if you get my drift. To phase him out in one film would be a HUGE mistake IMO. There a ton of ways that he could be written back into the MCU.
