Shazam! Director Warns Fans About Rumors

When it comes to the big blockbuster films, fans will always be looking for the latest bit of news or gossip. This quest often leads to rumors that circulate about those movies, and when actual news is lacking, rumors can become the main things people talk about. A recent rumor regarding Shazam! got a lot of fans excited, and after being forced to shoot it down, director David F. Sandberg asked all fans to do their best to disregard all rumors, as they will so often disappoint. According to Sandberg...

I hate for people to be disappointed but I can't respond to every rumor. Safest bet is to not believe anything that hasn't been officially announced.

The specific rumor, in this case, was in regards to a new trailer for Shazam! that some believed would apparently be hitting the internet yesterday. David F. Sandberg responded on Twitter that this was not the case, but not fast enough to frustrate some fans who had become excited for the potential of new footage in the interim.

The rumor mill is always a dangerous place. The problem, of course, is that sometimes, not infrequently, the rumors that come out turn out to be entirely, or partially, true. This means that the next time a rumor comes out it can be given more weight than it truly deserves. People will believe it simply because it's a rumor. However, rumors are just as frequently complete B.S, and since it's rarely possible to know where any given rumor comes from, it's difficult to know which is which.

Since it's impossible to know which rumors could be true and which are crap, David F. Sandberg's recommendation is to just disbelieve everything until it's confirmed by an official source. That certainly has the benefit of making sure you don't believe the false rumors, and while you might end up not believing something that turns out to be true, that's far from a big deal. You don't really gain much by believing anything early if it ends up getting confirmed before release anyway, and if you make it all the way to the movie, you get to enjoy something you didn't know was going to happen, while everybody else saw it coming and had it spoiled.

As far as this particular rumor. It might have been spawned by the new Shazam! footage that aired on television over the weekend. Somebody with knowledge of that before it happened might have morphed it into a new trailer rumor over time. Alternatively, it's possible we could be getting a new trailer sometime soon. Studios frequently end up changing dates around for things like that, so it's possible there was a trailer release planned at one point that then got canceled.

There will probably be many more rumors about Shazam! between now and the film's release in April. Until then, we'll all have to decide how much we want to believe them.

Beyond just being two films about musical icons, last years Bohemian Rhapsody and the recently released Rocketman share something else in common: director Dexter Fletcher. Fletcher finished the former film about Queen and Freddie Mercury after Bryan Singers firing and directed the latter film about Elton John from the start. Because of this connection, Rocketman could have contained a wild Bohemian Rhapsody crossover, as Dexter Fletcher explained:

There was an idea I had one point, where Eltons in a restaurant with his mother. I thought John Reid and Freddie could be at another table and they wave at each other! That would have been amazing, [but] it didnt come to pass. It wouldve been a little too knowing. Im not looking to set out to make a cinematic universe!

Dexter Fletcher is right in what he told Gay Star News, it would have been amazing to see Rami Maleks Freddie Mercury interacting with Taron Egertons Elton John, even if it were only something as small as a wave between the two. It's a neat idea that would have been a great little nod to Bohemian Rhapsody; an Easter egg that I imagine many fans would have freaked out about if it were hidden as a surprise in Rocketman.

Such a crossover wouldnt have been forced either and actually would have made some sense. Thats because of the character of John Reid, who provides the link between Queen and Elton John because he was the music manager for the former and the music manager and lover of the latter. Ironically, he was played by Game of Thrones vets in both movies, Aidan Gillen in Bohemian Rhapsody and Richard Madden in Rocketman.

Therefore this scene wouldnt have been out of the realm of possibility historically, and you can understand Dexter Fletchers temptation to work with Oscar winner Rami Malek again for a fun crossover like this. Yet, as the director said, this cameo did not come to pass. But it is not that Rami Malek didnt want to or because of some sort of scheduling conflict.

Dexter Fletcher never asked Rami Malek because he ultimately chose not to include such a cameo in the film, the reason being that as he said, it would be too knowing. While seeing Rami Maleks Freddie in Rocketman would have been a hugely crowd-pleasing moment, Dexter Fletchers reasoning makes sense. Less a winking reference, this cameo may have come off a bit more hammer over the head.

Its the kind of thing that would have taken you out of the movie for something that in the end was unnecessary. And having seen Rocketman, the scene Dexter Fletcher mentioned and when the cameo would have happened, where Elton is having dinner with his mother, is more serious in nature. A Rami Malek cameo as Freddie Mercury in that moment may have been tonally inconsistent with the rest of the scene.

Still, it would have been neat to see Freddie Mercury pop up at some point in Rocketman. Dexter Fletcher said he wasnt trying to make a cinematic universe, but it is kind of a fun idea. If John Reid werent played by different actors in the two films, he could have acted as the Nick Fury to the musical Avengers. Maybe if Bohemian Rhapsody somehow gets a sequel, Taron Egerton can show up.

Franchise Director Thinks Disney Is Wrong About National Treasure 3

It seems like Disney has become the home of every franchise under the sun, but one popular franchise has been seemingly ignored by the studio and the director of that franchise thinks that's a mistake. Jon Turteltaub, whose new film The Meg is set for release later this summer, was recently asked about the long-rumored third entry in the National Treasure franchise and while it seems the studio may not be entirely against the idea, he claims that Disney just thinks other franchises would be more successful, and thus National Treasure 3 is being ignored. Turteltaub respectfully disagrees with this strategy, saying...

When National Treasure first got made, there was a lot more money to go around. Everybody got paid nicely. The problem with getting the third one made isn't the people who are getting paid saying, "I'm not doing it unless you pay me a lot!" It's really that Disney feels they have other films they want to make that they think will make them more money. I think they're wrong. I think they're right about the movies they're making; they're obviously doing a really good job at making great films. I just think this would be one of them, and they don't quite realize how much the Internet is begging for a third National Treasure.

It's been over a decade since the second National Treasure movie was released back in 2007, but based on the numbers, Jon Turteltaub's comments to Collider seem right on the money. The first National Treasure that saw Nicolas Cage and company stealing the Declaration of Independence from the National Archives grossed over $350 million around the world. The sequel, released three years later, outdid that number by a cool $100 million. Those certainly aren't the box office numbers of a franchise that's cooling down.

There has been talk of a National Treasure 3 ever since the second film was a hit and as recently as a couple years ago there was some indication that a third entry might not be completely out of the cards, but certainly, nothing concrete has been planned.

Of course, back when Disney was making National Treasure movies it didn't own Marvel and it didn't own Lucasfilm, and those two studios have been making films that have regularly grossed more than your average National Treasure movie. Disney is certainly suffering from an embarrassment of riches in the box office department and while another studio might sell its soul for a National Treasure: Book of Secrets level hit, the fact is that Disney has an expectation that they'll do even better.

While it seems a National Treasure 3 script was never finalized, one was in development and far enough along that Jon Turteltaub believes a little more work could have brought the story to where it needed to be.

The Dark Phoenix Ending Makes No Sense Because Of Days Of Future Past

Warning: SPOILERS for Dark Phoenix are ahead!

In its nearly two decades of existence, the X-Men franchise was full of highs and lows, and one of the offenders in the latter category was the lack of continuity. From multiple versions of the same character existing within these movies to certain events and twists going unexplained, this mutant-filled series was never one to follow a straight and cohesive narrative path.

One attempt to rectify this problem came in 2014 with X-Men: Days of Future Past, which saw Wolverine traveling back to 1973 and changing the franchises timeline. Granted, there were still some continuity issues to follow, but at least in this revised timeline, rather than being hunted by Sentinels, things were peaceful for the X-Men in 2023. Unfortunately, with the way the recently-released Dark Phoenix concludes, its incredibly difficult to line up how events go from that ending to the brighter Days of Future Past future (for the sake of argument, lets assume that Logan takes place in a separate timeline).

In the revised X-Men timeline that came to be at the end of X-Men: Days of Future Past, Xaviers School of Gifted Youngsters is still running, with Storm, Beast, Kitty Pryde and Colossus all teaching young mutants, and Wolverine learning that hes a history instructor. Professor X is still the headmaster of the school, and the biggest surprise was that Cyclops and Jean Grey were still alive.

Now lets cut to Dark Phoenix, which ended with Jean Grey taking Vuk, the leader of the DBari, into space and killing the alien as she reabsorbed the stolen Phoenix force. Then, with her full potential unleashed, Jean disappeared into a fiery blaze of glory, although a flaming phoenix appeared in the sky in the movies final minute.

In the aftermath of the X-Mens conflict with Jean and the DBari aboard the Mutant Containment Unit train, Professor Xs school was renamed the Jean Grey School for Gifted Youngsters, and Charles himself finally retired from fighting for mutant rights and joined his old friend Erik Lensherr, a.k.a. Magneto, for a game of chess in France. Back at the school, Hank McCoy, a.k.a Beast, took over as headmaster, a role he more than deserves after all those years spent by Xaviers side.

Obviously a changed timeline meant that events will not unfold the same way. That was immediately obvious with Cyclops and Jean Grey being back at the end of Days of Future Past, and obviously Dark Phoenixs mere existence reaffirms that, as Jean Greys corruption this time around is much different than what happened in X-Men: The Last Stand.

Nevertheless, even with these changed events, logically speaking, its incredibly difficult to believe that with the way Dark Phoenix ends, were still on the path to that future shown at the end of X-Men: Days of Future Past. The renaming of the school isnt an issue since the outside of the building in 2023 was never shown, and neither is Beast and Storm still teaching there. No, the problem is where Professor X and Jean Grey are left at the end of Dark Phoenix.

Lets start with Jean. Its clear when Dark Phoenix wraps up that her fellow X-Men believe shes dead, but the sighting of that flaming phoenix is a not-so-subtle indicator shes still alive. And thats par for the course when it comes to comic book storytelling; most of the time, the characters never stay permanently dead.

But how specifically does Jean find her way back into the X-Mens lives? Was her reemergence intended to be another big event or does she just come back to the X-Mansion, say, Hey, guys, Im back and definitely not feeling murder-y anymore and everything goes back to normal? Theres a lot left to the imagination that frankly would

As far as Professor X is concerned, the fact that he retired from working towards improving mutants lives flies in the face of him still teaching at the now-Jean Grey School for Gifted Youngsters in Days of Future Past. Why should we see Xaviers decision to step down after acknowledging all the mistakes hed made as character growth when we know hell eventually be back to his usual routine. Assuming that Wolverine still joins the X-Men in this revised timeline around the same time he did in the original timeline (i.e. circa 2000), then that means Xavier will be back to overseeing the team of mutant superheroes within 10 years or so.

Admittedly, a lot can happen in three decades. Maybe Professor X decided retirement wasnt for him and he decided to return to working towards bettering life for mutants. And I could believe that if we actually saw that happen.

The same goes for Jean Grey; itd be easier to swallow her rejoining the X-Men if we saw more of her redemptive arc. Yes, she did save her teammates at the end of Dark Phoenix, but shes still a long way off towards resuming anything close to a normal life, especially if shes dealing with the Phoenix Force.

All this leads me to believe that, despite what Simon Kinberg and others have said about how Dark Phoenix was always intended to be the end of the X-Men franchise (not accounting for The New Mutants, which is still scheduled for release), it was initially planned for the movie to get a sequel, one where Jeans Phoenix arc would have been properly concluded and Professor X would have returned to action. However, once Disneys purchase of Fox was finalized, those plans were thrown out the window since Marvel is expected to reboot that property to fit within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Which leaves us here, where one has to do a lot of mental legwork to lay out how the new X-Men timeline can progress from Dark Phoenix to the future in X-Men: Days of Future Past. Despite Dark Phoenix being an incredibly rough watch, I would have welcomed a follow-up where all the pieces were properly in place for that future we saw in 2014. On the other hand, maybe it would have been better if this franchise had just ended on a high note with Days of Future Past.
