Should More Disney Live-Action Movies Like Aladdin Get Sequels?

Proving that all the handwringing over the look of Will Smiths Genie was overblown, Aladdin proved shining, shimmering, splendid at the box office over Memorial Day weekend, taking the top spot on the domestic charts. It is just the latest example of the financial success Disney has had in recent years with adapting its beloved animated classics to live-action blockbuster films.

The formula that has made these films such a success for Disney (minus a few underperformers), has also been the source of the most consistent and prevalent criticism levied against these remakes. The critics often mention these live-action remakes are too safe and lack originality, often hewing as close as possible to the animated films upon which they are based.

Those criticisms seem unlikely to abate anytime soon with Aladdin just one of the many live-action remakes Disney has on the calendar this year. The more outside-the-box Dumbo began the year, but there is still the Disney+ bound Lady and the Tramp, as well as theatrical releases Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and The Lion King, the latter of which audiences would be forgiven for assuming is just a shot-for-shot remake of the 1994 zenith of Disneys renaissance.

It is Maleficent 2 however that raises an interesting possibility and path forward that is worth talking and wondering about. Namely, should more Disney live-action movies like Aladdin get sequels?

The criticized lack of originality and sequels may not seem connected, but there are several reasons to think that Disney would be well served by turning some of its live-action reimaginings into film series. Disney is adapting its animated movies to live-action at a fairly rapid rate and I have wondered in the past what the studio will do once it exhausts the most beloved titles. These films are a big part of Disneys theatrical strategy at the moment, alongside Star Wars, the MCU and Pixar/Walt Disney Animation. I'd assume the studio wont want that revenue stream to dry up.

Giving films like Aladdin sequels would address this concern by providing Disney with more brand name titles to fill out its calendar for years to come. Sequels could also have the added benefit of the kind of risk-taking the live-action remakes to date have been criticized for lacking. To be clear, any perceived lack of originality hasnt hurt these films at the box office, but I think its fair to say wed all like to see Disney take some risks as well.

Whether it be theatrically or in its theme parks, Disney as it currently stands really values established brands and recognizable characters that audiences have already invested in. Sequels to Aladdin or The Lion King would bear all those crucial elements and could build off their predecessors success. They would have the benefit of nostalgic sentiment for the properties, while still having the creative latitude to innovate and tell a new story.

If you take something like Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle or Cobra Kai as an example, familiar brand names and characters and a powerful nostalgic quality can go a long way towards getting audiences to check out something new and unique. Sure, Aladdin 2 or Cinderella 2 would probably share more in common with their predecessors than those two titles resemble their forebears, but you get the idea.

Its true that Disney has already made sequels to many of its animated classics that could be theoretically be directly adapted, but those titles were generally straight-to-DVD and not always of the highest quality. Diverging too far from a beloved movie like Aladdin might result in major backlash, but I'm guessing not too many people are going to be heartbroken if Return of Jafar isnt faithfully adapted or a sequel goes in an entirely different direction.

That gives Disney the kind of creative freedom to tell better follow-up stories to their iconic properties that are inventive and new while still playing to nostalgia.

In addition to allowing for new storytelling, sequels would also draw fewer comparisons to the original animated films because they wouldnt be direct adaptations. Whenever something cherished is adapted to another medium, those things that are lost and changed in the translation are deeply lamented by fans. Sequels to Disneys live-action remakes would have no such hill to climb.

So, sequels to Disney live-action remakes like Aladdin would fall into an advantageous middle ground that would confer the nostalgia of an established, beloved property as well as allowing for the kind of creativity many critics of Disneys reimaginings want to see.

This is all theoretical, though, and alongside the surmised benefits of these sequels are a slew of potential pitfalls that could make such pursuits rather tricky.

The biggest problem is that originality does not equal quality. The live-action remakes that have arguably skewed the furthest from their animated counterparts, Alice in Wonderland and Maleficent, are also two of the least memorable adaptations. These films were successes at the box office to be sure, but they arent held up as Disneys best reimaginings. Anecdotally, it seems to me that among many Disney fans Maleficent especially is disliked for how far it strayed from Sleeping Beauty by fundamentally altering the story.

Audiences hold these stories too dearly and any sequel that takes the story and the characters in a direction they dont approve of might get rejected at the box office. Then again, sequels arent the original animated movies so perhaps audiences will be a little more open and forgiving than they otherwise would.

The other knock against going the sequel route with Disneys live-action remakes is that it is basically an unproven formula at the moment. If you dont count 2000s 102 Dalmatians, which I dont, the only modern sequel to one of Disneys live-action remakes is 2016s Alice Through the Looking Glass. That sequel was critically loathed and didnt even crack $300 million worldwide when Alice in Wonderland made over $1 billion.

Thats a small sample size though and just because it hasnt really worked doesnt mean it wont. We should find out eventually because The Jungle Book from 2016 will be getting a sequel. Jungle Book 2 will go a long way towards testing the efficacy of giving sequels to these live-action reimaginings.

After that who knows? Despite its tremendous box office, Beauty and the Beast does not look like it will be getting a sequel, even though it was once considered and Emma Watson seems down for one. If I had to put money on it, Id guess The Lion King has the best shot at getting a sequel after Jungle Book.

Even without seeing it, that movie is bound to do boffo business and seems like it would have more interesting directions to go in a sequel as opposed to something like Cinderellas pure happily ever after ending. Aladdin could also be an interesting choice with plenty of storytelling opportunities raised by the first film and mythology to delve into.

So there are some big theoretical benefits to Disney giving sequels to its live-action remakes, but those sequels come with big question marks and a risk of failure. Ultimately, the best approach, at least s it seems to me, would be the one Pixar took with the Toy Story franchise. Toy Story 3 was the last movie until the team at Pixar had a great story they wanted to tell and that became Toy Story 4. Disney should adopt that methodology and only give sequels to those films that are ripe for it, where there is a sequel in need of telling.

How Liam Neeson's Cold Pursuit Is Faring With Critics

In the decade since Taken, Liam Neeson-kills-people movies have basically become their own sub-genre, adding a chapter as an action leading man to the actors long and successful career. These films arent necessarily known for their critical acclaim, but they are clearly profitable enough that they keep getting made. The next entry in the genre is Cold Pursuit from director Hans Petter Moland, which is a remake of his 2014 Norwegian film In Order of Disappearance.

Although the film doesnt release for another week, the first reviews for Cold Pursuit are now coming in. So is the latest opportunity to see Liam Neeson beat people up and kill them in creative ways more Taken or Taken 2 and Taken 3? Well, according to Varietys Courtney Howard, Moland succeeds in remaking his own work, even improving it in certain ways:

By pumping up the darkly comedic undertones, augmenting the frigid chill of the original, Molands terrific, riveting noir-tinged picture distinguishes itself from other rote, reductive remakes.

Although it hasnt really been pitched as such in the trailers, a theme of the reviews for the film is how spot-on and pitch black the comedy is in the film. Some reviews are evoking the Coen Brothers and Fargo as a comparison. So while Cold Pursuit is an action movie, it is self-aware and knows how absurd it is, as Katie Rife highlighted in her review for AV Club:

Cold Pursuit knows that killing a man with a snow plow is a ridiculous macho fantasy, and its going to give it to you anywaybut not without a wink and a smile.

Forbes Scott Mendelson also found the movies dark sense of humor riotously funny and in his review he highlighted that Cold Pursuit isnt just another action-film filled with one-dimensional characters and thats what sets it apart.

What makes this movie shine is the quality of the screenplaythis film is filled to the brim with fully-sketched characters who are all the protagonists in their own respective life story.

Liam Neeson himself has wondered why he is still being cast as an action star at his age and it seems that Cold Pursuit almost offers something of a meta-commentary on that, as more of a character-driven crime film than a standard action flick. In his review for IGN, Witney Seibold highlighted this point, saying:

Cold Pursuit is partly a great action thriller, and Liam Neeson is still kicking plenty of butt, but the film is mostly an intriguing, relaxing, totally tuckered-out character study of old men running out of the energy required to run a criminal enterprise.

Many of the reviews are casting Cold Pursuit as more of a crime drama and a black comedy than as a straight-up action movie and while the result is a better movie than many Liam Neeson revenge movies, it may not be what audiences are expecting. The Hollywood Reporters John Defore suspects that although the movie may not have legs at the box office, it may still stand the test of time:

Offers ample violence but is not another post-Taken piece of grim vigilante wish-fulfillment. Confused expectations may put a damper on box office, but the film should have a longer life than many of Neeson's more generic action outings.

Although the reviews for Cold Pursuit are largely positive so far, there are still nits to pick. For The Wraps Alonso Duralde, the competing tones in this film work at cross purposes, succeeding on their own but not in tandem. He said in his review:

Its the combo of dark humor and violence where the movie never quite reaches a balance. To be too jokey removes the stakes of the killings, and to be too grotesquely violent makes the laughs catch in the throat.

All in all, based on the early reviews, Cold Pursuit sounds like it is a win for Liam Neeson, working as something different for those tired of his action roles, while still having plenty of bloody and brutal violence. If you go in with an open mind and don't allow the trailers or Liam Neeson's previous action roles to set certain expectations, it seems like you'll have a good time.

James Cameron Refused To Make Terminator: Dark Fate Without Arnold Schwarzenegger

With the exception of Terminator Salvation (though his likeness was still used in that), Arnold Schwarzenegger has participated in every Terminator movie, and Terminator: Dark Fate is no exception. Dark Fate also marks the return of Terminator franchise mastermind James Cameron, who is producing while Deadpools Tim Miller handles directing duties.

That being said, before signing on to Terminator: Dark Fate, James Cameron made it clear that he would only participate if Arnold Schwarzenegger was involved as well, as those two have been friendly with one another for decades. In Camerons words:

I said 'Look I'd love to be involved in this, but I can't be involved in a Terminator movie without working with my good friend of 35 years, Arnold Schwarzenegger, even if it's to officially pass the baton to a new generation of characters. So that's what we all agreed to do. Then the question became what about Linda [Hamilton], does Linda want to come back?

James Cameron then added in the now-pulled interview hed done with Flicks and the City that there was never a plan to have a new actress play Sarah Connor, as was done in Terminator Genisys, where Emilia Clarke played the character. If Linda Hamilton hadnt wanted to reprise Sarah, then Sarah wouldnt have been included.

Fortunately for James Cameron and the Terminator: Dark Fate team, Linda Hamilton was willing to appear on camera again as Sarah, her first time doing so since 1991s Terminator 2: Judgement Day (though she did vocally cameo in Terminator Salvation). And from what we've seen so far, she won't be lacking in badass action scenes.

Terminator 2: Judgement Day also marked James Camerons last direct contribution to the Terminator franchise until Terminator: Dark Fate, but evidently he and Arnold Schwarzenegger have remained close in the nearly three decades since then. So after James Cameron regained the Terminator film rights, he refused to pitch in with Dark Fate until Schwarzeneggers involvement was cemented. Though its not like Cameron really had anything to worry about, as Schwarzenegger is still the face of this franchise.

While Arnold Schwarzeneggers age wasnt an issue in the first three Terminator movies (though his skin was sagging a little in Rise of the Machines), it definitely needed to be acknowledged by the time Terminator Genisys rolled around. That movie had Schwarzenegger playing Guardian, a.k.a. Pops, a T-800 sent back to look after Sarah Connor as a child. As the years passed, Guardianss skin covering aged like a normal humans and his robotic body was somewhat in a state of disrepair in the present day.

Well meet another aged T-800 model in Terminator: Dark Fate, although its worth remembering that this movie is only serving as a direct sequel to the first two Terminator movies, with the entries in between having occurred in different timelines. Its unclear how this T-800 specifically fits into the story other than that he will help protect Natalie Reyes Dani Ramos, whos being hunted by a Rev-9 Terminator, played by Gabriel Luna.

Its also worth mentioning that back in 2017, James Cameron talked about the possibility of including the human who served as the inspiration for the T-800's design. Whether or not that will be part of Terminator: Dark Fate remains to be seen, although Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines did touch on that in a deleted scene.

Still, given James Camerons mention of passing the baton (which hes said before), if Terminator: Dark Fate gets a sequel, we should prepare ourselves for the possibility that this movie will serve as a swan song for Arnold Schwarzenegger and/or Linda Hamilton. If thats the case, then this would definitely be a major, if not the biggest, shift for the Terminator franchise yet.
