Jason Momoa Wants His Aquaman To Be A Blue Collar Hero

While Aquaman has been a part of pop culture since his creation in 1941, the upcoming Aquaman movie offers a major opportunity for reinvention. We've already gotten a taste of what Jason Momoa is bringing to the character courtesy of Justice League, but his solo adventure will be a chance for the DC Extended Universe to dig much deeper. So what does Jason Momoa want people to see from the hero in James Wan's movie? In his own words, he wants him to be perceived as blue collar:

I think I wanted to make [the guy you can have a beer with]; I think that's why they kind of hired me to play the role. I mean, he's serious, but he's just jaded. He's just seen so much, and he doesn't really trust anyone. I think it's all about building the trust, and that's the whole Justice League thing - just being the team. You can't sit down and have a beer with Superman, you know what I mean? You can't. I wanted Aquaman definitely to be that guy - that he's blue collar. I mean the whole thing about him, I wanted him blue collar: he's raised with his dad, worked on bikes, worked on old cars with his father, and at a certain age he's given this gift. He doesn't know how to deal with it.

While primarily set after the events of Justice League, Aquaman will dive into the character's origins and unveil his unique background, and it seems it will be this exposure to his roots that will reveal him as the blue collar hero Jason Momoa wants you to see. This comes from a roundtable interview I did last summer on the set of Aquaman, which I had the chance to visit along with a small group of other film journalists. We had a good amount of time to sit down with Momoa to discuss his vision for Arthur Curry, and a bit part of it for him is recognizing the character's humanity in addition to his power.

Continuing, Jason Momoa further explained how that that divide between two worlds advances the character and makes him a deeper individual. He is in the unfortunate position of being a part of two very different worlds, and that in a way makes him a part of no worlds. He has his prejudices on both sides, but it's also his relationship to both that Momoa believes will make him a just king when he gets to that point. Said the actor,

His dad doesn't want him in the water, cause he doesn't want him taken away. The only thing he does know is that his mother was killed. He wants nothing to do with these people. Fucking hates 'em. And, I wanted to see what kinds of jobs he did when he left his dad's house, working on big oil rigs. He can go underneath, and he saved people and he hasn't saved people. And the side he can't cope with is his human side. That's what makes him great. That's what's gonna make him a great king, is his humanity.

Jason Momoa clearly sees Arthur Curry as individualistic but driven by a strong morality, and is working to make him an everyman in that way. In contrast, though, the same can't really be said for Black Manta -- the legendary DC Comics villain who will be adapted in live-action for the first time in Aquaman, played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. During our time with the actor, he was asked what he would say to his character if he were to see him in a bar, and he had a very comical response:

I wouldn't sit next to that motherfucker! I would not... You don't give that man advice; he's not going to take it! Thank you so much! I tried to give you something back for that as an answer, but I'm like, 'No, no, I'm not going to sit next to him!'

These are some enlightening takes on important characters, and we are now just a few months from seeing them up on the big screen. Aquaman will be bringing its eponymous hero and Black Manta to theaters this December, specifically on December 21st. With a supporting cast that also includes Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Patrick Wilson, Dolph Lundgren, Ludi Lin, Temuera Morrison, and Nicole Kidman, we are definitely excited -- and will have more for you from my time on set soon.

The Spider-Man Scene That Took Tobey Maguire 156 Takes

Sometimes, it's easy to forget that actors are human too. Thanks to the magic of editing, we don't often see the mistakes they make or the lines they flub. In fact, one of the main reasons why outtakes, gag reels and bloopers are usually so well-liked is because they give us that chance to see actors at their most human. When you have to pull off a tricky stunt in just the right, there are a lot of takes that wind up on the cutting room floor. Such was the case for Tobey Maguire in 2002's Spider-Man.

As you might recall, in the cafeteria scene early into the film, there is a moment where Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) is getting adjusted to his brand new Spidey powers. And he harbors a secret/not-so-secret crush on Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst).

In a moment of vulnerability, Mary Jane slips on some spilled juice (where's the janitor when you need them?) and she's about to crash onto the floor and have her lunch fall all over her face. But thankfully, Peter's Spidey senses are alerted, he catches the girl and, in one fell swoop, catches all the items that were on her tray. He makes it look completely graceful, but that is far from the truth.

As it was noted by The Independent, this scene with Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst in the school cafeteria didn't come together quite as neatly as it did in the final product. Indeed, it took a lot of takes in order to get it right. And we're not taking five, or 10, or 20, or even 40. We're talking David Fincher/Stanley Kubrick-level takes.

That's right, this memorable scene required 156 takes in total in order for this shot to be wrapped. And the reason is because this special shot was created without any CG effects at all. Yep, it was all real and practical. As you can expect, it's not-so-easy for a mere mortal like Tobey Maguire to do what Spider-Man can so naturally.

This information was explained on Spider-Man's DVD commentary by John Dykstra, the head of the VFX team for the film and a special effects artist. In a pretty cheeky way, Dykstra admitted that it wasn't ultimately special effects that brought this shot to life. It was Tobey Maguire himself actually catching all the items on the trey, although it didn't entirely work the first 100-plus times. Here's how Dykstra explains this shot on the commentary:

This next gag here, where he catches all this stuff, he actually did that. Pretty good. Take 156.

To confirm John Dykstra's claims, Kirsten Dunst also confirmed this bit of information on her own commentary track, also going into a little more detail about how Tobey Maguire was able to stick all the items onto the tray in just a rapid fashion. You know, after nearly two hundred attempts ...

Not CGI by the way, thats all Tobey, which is pretty impressive. They used sticky glue stuff to stick his hand to the tray.

Alas, as you would expect, the studio in this case, Sony wasn't necessarily jazzed about having this scene in the film in the first place. But Sam Raimi insisted upon it, and while it required a whopping 16-hour day of shooting, they were finally able to pull of this shot. I imagine that after the take they used was finished, there was a lot of clapping and celebrating, because they finally got it.

And it's a good thing they did too, because it has become one of the most iconic shots from the film. It was seen in all the advertisements, and it is one of the first things you remember about the film and the wizardry that Sam Raimi used in order to bring this story to life on the big screen. It was a simpler time then. Even though we were given the false hope of a potential Spider-Man 4, it turns out that Sam Raimi's days with Spider-Man are done for good, sadly.

It's sad to think that a shot like this one will probably never be seen on the big screen again. While there are no shortage of great special effects in movies today, particularly in Spider-Man movies, there are only a few that are as impressive as the one seen in this particular film. The result is an incredible accomplishment. When you know about all the hard work and tenacity that went into this shot to bring it to the screen, it's hard not to be taken aback by the persistence and the quality filmmaking brought not only by Sam Raimi and the crew, but by Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst too.

But it's also important to remember that, while some actors can nail a scene in just one or two takes, there are some who need hundreds in order to get exactly what's needed for the film. After all, actors are human, like you and me. Even when they play larger-than-life superheroes like Spider-Man.

Big crowd pleasers like Green Book and Bohemian Rhapsody may have dominated the Golden Globes last night; however, Netflix's Roma came through in a few key categories. In fact, Alfonso Cuaron won Best Director for the project, prompting one journalist to ask Cuaron how he felt about some distributors believing "that Roma's success signals the death of independent filmmakers." The director's answer was apt:

I think that it's very unfair to say that. Why don't you take the list of foreign films this year, and compare the theatrical release of those films, and for how long they've been playing? See how many are playing in 17 mill. See the territories in which this film is playing.

There have been some outspoken people in the industry who have spoken out against choosing streaming platforms instead of theatrical releases, including big names like Quentin Tarantino and Christopher Nolan. People who don't like the streaming platform have stated its aversion to keeping theaters in business as the main reason they aren't on board. However, to Alfonso Cuaron's way of thinking, it's unfair to compare the two mediums.

He went on in his talk to discuss how his very Mexican-oriented movie was filmed in "black and white" and also "in Spanish." He mentioned it has no stars and would likely never thrive in a regular theatrical release. In that context, he feels Roma is a good fit at Netflix.

I just hope the discussion between Netflix and platforms in general should be over. Think those guys, platforms and theatrical, should go together and just realize that whatever they are doing to this discussion is hurting cinema. They both together they can elevate cinema. And more important: they can create that diversity in cinema.

The subscription streaming service has started ramping up its efforts to produce original movies by big name directors. Martin Scorsese has a new movie coming in 2019. This year saw Alfonso Cuaron and Joel and Ethan Coen create titles for awards consideration on the streaming platform. (Roma has been more popular with critics than The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.)

Still, Netflix has a long way to go if it hopes to produce big budget titles rivaling what we see on the big screen. The streaming service has attempted to replicate or at least approximate the theatrical experience with movies like Bright, with mixed results.

At some point, it may turn out that Netflix becomes a great platform for the indie filmmaker while people continue to go to the theater for bigger, splashier kinds of spectacle. We'll have to wait and see how the system works in the future, but one thing is for certain: Movie theaters made more money than ever this year.
