Hollywood Icon Doris Day Has Died At 97

If you're a fan of classic Hollywood films, it's pretty safe bet that you're a fan of Doris Day. Day was one of the top box office attractions of the 1950s and 60s starring in such hits as Pillow Talk, The Man Who Knew Too Much, and Move Over, Darling. Day passed away this morning at her home at the age of 97 following a brief fight with pneumonia.

Born Doris Mary Kappelhoff on April 3, 1922, Day's goal as a child was to be a dancer but a serious car accident when she was very young cut those dreams short. Instead, she turned to singing. She performed with some of the most popular bands of the 1940s and recorded several hits.

Singing success then led to screen opportunities and Day was cast in her first film, 1948's Romance on the High Seas. While she never stopped singing, releasing an album as recently as 2012, it would be her film work for which she would become best known.

Doris Day would come to be known as the "girl next door" or the "Virginal Queen." Most of her most popular film roles were romantic comedies, and while sex was always in the subtext, Day's characters always remained pure.

Doris Day starred in three such films opposite Rock Hudson, including Pillow Talk for which she would be nominated for her one Academy Award. She also starred opposite James Garner in Move Over, Darling, a 1963 comedy in which Day performed a role that had been intended for Marilyn Monroe, who died during the film's initial production under the title Something's Got To Give.

While Doris Day may have been best known for comedies, she made her share of serious drams as well and showed no less of an aptitude for them. 1951's Storm Warning dealt with the violence of the Klu Klux Klan. In 1956 she would star opposite Jimmy Stewart in Alfred Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much.

Day made her last film in 1968 and transitioned to television, where she starred in The Doris Day Show, which ran until 1973. Following her retirement from the screen, Doris Day became somewhat reclusive, dedicating her time to her passion for animals, founding the Doris Day Animal Foundation, in the 1970s. The Foundation announced her death this morning.

There was a rumor a few years back that Day might actually come out of retirement to make a movie with Clint Eastwood, but nothing ever came of it.

Doris Day outlived her only child, record producer Terry Melcher, who died of melanoma in 2004 at the age of 62.

Doris Day was the definition of a Hollywood legend. Her career spanned decades and she was always at the top of her profession. Her best performances have truly stood the test of time. Check out a great scene from Pillow Talk below.

Why Hollywood Should Make More Two-Part Movies

In Hollywood, more is always more. In the current IP-driven marketplace, the name of the game is sequels, franchises, trilogies and cinematic universes. So many movies are planned out with these goals in mind and three seems to be the minimum number of required films for any sort of blockbuster series. To a degree that's natural. After all, stories have beginnings, middles and ends. Also, many movie trilogies are adapted from novel trilogies, so the one to one translation makes sense. Cinematic history is filled with great trilogies too: The Lord of the Rings, the modern Planet of the Apes, Toy Story, Star Wars. So trilogies are the de facto standard that many properties aim for. There is, however, another format that is much more rare: the two-parter. We don't see them very often, but two-part movies or duologies (technically dilogies, but I prefer duology, etymological accuracy be damned) are a unique storytelling format that is underutilized and Hollywood should make more of them.

The history of two-part movies is not particularly notable. There are no lists of greatest duologies like there are for trilogies. YA properties like Hunger Games, Harry Potter and Twilight all had final installments divided into two parts, but I don't count those since they were all part of a larger series of films. Also, to be clear, I mean two movies conceived of as two movies. Not a movie and its sequel like The Incredibles and Incredibles 2 or The Equalizer and The Equalizer 2. I'm talking about something like IT.

Some might say that IT works as a two-parter because it is based on source material that has a natural and obvious break point to separate that story. The novel is also a doorstopper. But if we look at Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill, we see how an entirely original story can work as a two-part movie. Kill Bill is really just one long story; a bloody affair that is separated in the middle, providing a fun sort of cliffhanger that left audiences wondering if and how Beatrix Kiddo would fulfill the mission statement in the title.

There are several merits of a two-part movie. For one, as agonizing as they can sometimes be, cliffhangers are fun. Ending in the middle of a story often leaves you on the edge of your seat waiting for the next installment. There is also something cool about watching a movie and then knowing that the next time you visit that world, you will see the conclusion to that story. It's not a drawn out process. Even for IT, where the two halves are separated by two years, that intervening time just builds the anticipation for the end of the story. Trilogies also tend to feel like distinctly separate films with multiple arcs, while two-part movies can feel more like one long story.

The structure of a two-part movie also provides another option to make the form of a film suit the content of the story. Not all stories need three or more films. Two-part movies can be used as a way to provide a tighter, cleaner story than three plus films would. The Hobbit films were probably never going to live up to The Lord of the Rings, but would they be remembered with quite as much disappointment if they had stuck to the earlier plan to be a two-film series? Maybe, maybe not, but it's worth considering.

Alternatively, not all stories fit neatly into a feature length film, even a long one. A two-part move could allow for a story to breathe. When adapting existing source material, mythology can be fleshed out and a greater degree of faithfulness can be achieved. Blade Runner 2049 director Denis Villeneuve is making Dune, based on Frank Herbert's epic and influential science fiction novel. Dune is part of a series, so Denis Villeneuve's exact adaptation goals aren't 100% clear, but he has stated that his goal is to make two Dune movies. If he is just referring to the first book, two movies is a great way to go. The novel is 896 pages long and contains dense Game of Thrones-esque mythology to introduce audiences to. Letting that be fully fleshed out over two films is a great way to do justice to the story and let it breathe.

Sometimes two movies might be the sweet spot between a single, overly condensed film and three or more movies where too much of the runtime is spent treading water. As is the case with anything, the form should fit the content. I would never advocate adapting a trilogy of novels into two truncated films, but sometimes when there isn't an obvious three-film arc, less is more. Obviously two-part movies should not be utilized as a way to double the profits by stretching out a story like butter over too much bread. However, for stories that justify two films, the studio will be positioned to reap double the financial benefits.

It's often hard enough to get enough money for one movie, so unless a powerful creator is making it, most movies that aren't based on some existing IP are going to have trouble getting financing for two films. But when it is possible, as an adaptation or an original project, the two-part model is worth considering.

While CGI, motion capture, Steadicam, 3D or any number of technologies and techniques are viewed as tools that enable a filmmaker to tell a story, the format and length of the story is also a tool. Right now, two-part movies are a tool that is largely going unused. Hollywood should start looking at the benefits of two-part movies and begin utilizing this format more often, ushering a new era of great duologies, dilogies, diptych's, whatever.

A Quiet Place Had An Unexpected Effect On The Rock, According To Skyscrapers Producer

When it comes to action, few performers know their way around the genre quite like The Rock. He has proven that he likes to challenge himself within that realm by taking on new heroes, with Skyscraper representing his latest attempt at something fresh and new. However, what about the idea of The Rock in a horror movie? I recently posed this question to Skyscraper producer and President of Production at Seven Bucks Productions, Hiram Garcia, and he explained that The Rock recently walked out of a screening of A Quiet Place beaming over the possibilities that the genre holds. Garcia explained:

It's funny, we all had a very special screening, we're shooting Jungle Cruise with Emily Blunt and she's married to John Krasinski, we had a great private screening. You could see coming out of it me and Dwayne were looking at each other, he was like, 'Man we gotta get our horror movie. It's gonna be so much fun!' We're huge horror fans and it's funny that you mention it because that's something that we always talk about.

The Rock is currently in the process of working on the Jungle Cruise movie with Emily Blunt, so he was able to get a special screening of A Quiet Place when John Krasinski brought the film during a visit. Following the screening of the film (which has gone on to become one of the most critically and commercially successful movies so far this year), the muscle-bound actor apparently noted to Hiram Garcia that he would like to get his own horror movie off of the ground at some point in the near future.

Of course, while Hiram Garcia and The Rock have talked about getting the behemoth action star into a horror movie of his very own, one other thing that they have discussed is the awesome possibility of getting the wrestler-turned-actor into the Alien franchise. Garcia continued:

Like how cool would it be to see Dwayne in like an Aliens movie? We talk about it all the time. It's just a matter of finding it and finding where we can slot it.

Just think about The Rock taking on a Xenomorph in a one-on-one battle. Doesn't that sound awesome? This writer certainly thinks so. That said, as Hiram Garcia noted during our chat, The Rock's slate is currently reasonably packed with projects like Red Notice, Black Adam, and the Hobbs and Shaw film, and it might take a while to find that perfect horror movie to draw him into the genre. Nevertheless, it's undeniably exciting to know that he wants to make a scary flick at some point.

Only time will tell of The Rock will get that perfect horror story that draws him into the genre. Until then, we can rest easy knowing that he has a firm grip on the action world. If you want to see his latest entry in the genre, you can catch Skyscraper in theaters right now!
