The Time Crazy Rich Asians Director Jon M. Chu Snuck Into The Oscars

At Sunday nights Oscars, it was a treat to see many of the Crazy Rich Asians cast members as they owned the red carpet with their looks, as well as presented some golden trophies with other big names as they celebrated their status as one of the most buzzy movies of 2018. It didnt matter much that Crazy Rich Asians didnt score a single Oscar nomination, they just looked thrilled to be there and having a blast.

Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu joined his breakout stars at the show, sitting second row at the Academy Awards and witness to highlights such as Bradley Cooper and Lady Gagas Shallow performance and Melissa McCarthys hilarious rabbit costume moment. After Hollywoods big night, Chu shared his first Oscars memory, which was a very different experience then this years. In his words:

The first Academy Awards I ever went to was in 2001 when I made a fake pass and snuck in. I watched the whole show from backstage. What an honor to be there with Constance Wu, Michelle Yeoh, Awkwafina, Henry Golding and Gemma Chan celebrating a year that we will never forget.

Impressive to both Jon M. Chu pulling off sneaking into the Oscars and his fame glow up since! In 2001, Chu witnessed Steve Martin as host, Julia Roberts and Russell Crowes Best Actor wins and Gladiator being awarded Best Picture. The filmmaker probably had an incredible time seeing the show backstage, with that Im not supposed to be here but am, ha! adrenaline pumping, which is comparatively completely different then walking the red carpet, sitting in the front seats and celebrating his blockbuster film.

Jon M. Chu shared the funny tidbit on his Instagram with a bunch of glamorous photos of him with some of the stars of Crazy Rich Asians, like Constance Wu, Henry Golding and Awkwafina. He and Michelle Yeoh also captured a selfie with The Favourites Best Actress Oscar winners Olivia Colman and Emma Stone, along with organizer-extraordinaire Marie Kondo. Take a look:

It looks like they had a grand ol time! Although many felt Crazy Rich Asians got snubbed for not being recognized by the Academy this year, amidst nods at the Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild Awards and such, but their presence at the show certainly helped represent the impact of the movie and the Academys interest in their work.

Constance Wu had the opportunity to present the Oscar for Best Original Song to the A Star is Born writers for Shallow alongside Black Panthers Chadwick Boseman. Awkwafina also presented with comedian John Mulaney for the Best Short Film categories. Michelle Yoeh joined Pharrell took the stage to present the Best Animated Feature. Henry Golding and Gemma Chan offered up carpet-stealing looks, especially with Chans dress, with pockets of cookies. Can they all just collectively host the show next year?

Why The Ant-Man Series Is More Important To The MCU Than You Realize

Why The Ant-Man Series Is More Important To The MCU Than You Realize

Last week's debut of Ant-Man and The Wasp kept the Marvel Cinematic Universe on top of the box office, but this weekend is probably going to be a bit more difficult, with Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation and Skyscraper duking it out for supremacy as early as Thursday night. Much like the first Ant-Man movie, it's a success, but not one that's seen as integral to the success of the MCU. But don't let the numbers fool you, as Scott Lang's exploits are more important to the workings of Marvel Studio's blockbuster printing press than you'd expect.

Ant-Man and The Wasp is just as breezy and less story driven as its predecessor, leaving the film to serve as a sort of break for folks still recovering from the harrowing events of Avengers: Infinity War. And yet, that's one of the exact reasons that Peyton Reed's latest comedy hit is vital to the overall framework of Marvel's extended exercise in storytelling. If Kevin Feige allowed all of his films to take on the darker, more serious implications of 2018's biggest hit so far, he'd be allowing the entire universe to slip into a grimdark state. And we all know what happens when you let your comic movies run too dark for too long.

While both Ant-Man films may be a bit lower in stakes, they excel when it comes to another keystone to any good cinematic universe's development: the characters that inhabit the universe. While Scott Lang may be a goofy lead in his two solo efforts, his development in such a role only helps him become a better comedic relief when thrown into films like Captain America: Civil War. Those sort of skills are going to be sorely needed when Paul Rudd makes his Avengers 4 debut, as that film will be resolving the dark finale of its predecessor, with a presumed eye towards brightening the entire franchise up again.

Perhaps the most important implication of films like Ant-Man and The Wasp is that if Marvel Studios can take a chance on a film once described as a super-powered version of The Thin Man, there's nothing the studio should prevent themselves from experimenting with. Maybe Scott Derrickson can be given some free reign to take any sequel to Doctor Strange further into the realm of horror. Perhaps we can get a romantic drama, with Captain Marvel trying to settle down with a more Earthbound counterpart. The sky's the limit, so long as Marvel Studios keeps putting out the hits, and cashing the blank checks the movie-going public lets them write.

Diversity is the key to any ecosystem's survival, and film franchises are no different. You can't just keep putting out the same films all of the time, and think that the audience will come back with open wallets. With 20 films under their belt, and a full decade of experience in setting, reshuffling, and tweaking their house of cards, Marvel Studios knows full well that they've got an opportunity to push the genre of comic book films to greater heights. But in order to continue the fine work they've done, they'll need to keep taking chances like the ones they've given to Ant-Man's adventures.

So while there are plenty of newer offerings to come to theaters this weekend, and all of the weekends between now and Captain Marvel's March 8, 2019 release date, don't forget to take Ant-Man and The Wasp for a spin -- if you haven't already. You might be surprised how much fun it is, and you'll be doing the powers that be a favor by rewarding their attempts at keeping things fresh.

Yes, DCs Birds Of Prey Movie Will Be Rated R

Yes, DCs Birds Of Prey Movie Will Be Rated R

Following the massive success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and method of serialized storytelling, quite a few studios have tried to create shared universes of their own. Chief among them is Warner Bros' live-action world, which ended up being conceptualized after the success of Zack Snyder's Man of Steel in 2013. DC has since announced countless projects, with a handful that seem to be actively developing.

One of the blockbusters Warner Bros. seems to be actively pursuing is the upcoming Birds of Prey movie. Based off of the DC female team of the same name, the upcoming project is looking as if it will be another starring vehicle for Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, after she stole the show as part of the ensemble cast in David Ayer's Suicide Squad. While much of the project is still a mystery (including its title), it looks like the DC universe is going to break new ground with the film, as it'll reportedly be getting an R-rating.

This news is a potential game changer for DC and more specifically Warner Bros., as the studio still seems to be struggling with finding its niche within the superhero genre. There are a ton of comic book blockbusters being produced at any given time, with superhero fatigue looming above each potential project. The most ambitious and original movies are resonating with audiences, and now it seems like the DC film universe wants to get in on the R-rated fun that has proven so successful for movies like Deadpool and Logan.

Reports of Birds of Prey's R-rating come to us from the U.S.-China Entertainment Summit in LA, courtesy of Deadline. Director Cathy Yan will be helming the female-focused movie for DC, and opened up at the event about the project's development. It was during this presentation that Yan confirmed Birds of Prey was going to be rated R, breaking new ground for the still young film universe.

The idea of Birds of Prey being rated R is going to be exciting for some hardcore comic fans, who are used to seeing all sort of violence and excitement on the page. The movie is going to focus on villains as well as the heroes, so the rating will hopefully allow the femme fatales to go full tilt in regards to their violence and villainy. Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn is already a fully-formed character; however, this new rating may allow The Joker's partner and sidekick to become a deadlier version of the character introduced in Suicide Squad.

Since Birds of Prey is still accruing its cast and production team, it's unclear exactly which characters will be included in Cathy Yan's upcoming superhero debut. Plenty of rumors have swirled around about the inclusion of Catwoman and Poison Ivy, with actresses campaigning to be included in the project. The latter seems like a great choice for the project, as Harley and Ivy's friendship in both the comic books and Batman: The Animated Series have become a fan favorite plot point. Unfortunately, only the film's heroes have been announced.

Cathy Yan has been slowly assembling a production team to bring Birds of Prey to life, including a cinematographer in Matthew Libatique, and a screenwriter in Christina Hodson. The cast is also being formed, as the first three stars (other than Margot Robbie) have been listed for fans to peruse.

10 Cloverfield Lane actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead is set to play Helena Bertinelli / Huntress, who is a vigilante from Gotham City. A member of the Bat-family, Huntress has a dark childhood full of trauma, and uses methods that are deadlier than Batman usually allows. She'll be joined by Jurnee Smollett-Bell (True Blood) as Black Canary, and Do The Right Thing actress and The View host Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya.

While appearing at the U.S.-China Entertainment Summit, Cathy Yan also opened up about how she ended up getting involved in the Birds of Prey movie. She was apparently enthralled with the first draft of the script, and knew this was the right project to make her superheroic debut. As Yan told it,

I could not put the script down, it had so much dark humor to it which a lot of my work does, and there are themes of female empowerment which are so strong and relatable. So I went in with, not with confidence, but at least a sense that I belonged in the room, that somehow magically in terms of timing and luck that this opportunity was open to me and I was definitely going to make the best of it.

Well, this is overall really exciting. With so little information currently available for Birds of Prey, DC fans and moviegoers alike are eager for any information and glimpses into the upcoming project. And considering the DCEU's many peaks and valleys, everyone is hoping that the shared universe has seen the last of its missteps with Justice League. Fingers crossed.

Since superhero movies have become so commonplace, it's fascinating to watch filmmakers attempt to do something unique and original with the iconic source material. Fox took a huge risk with Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool, as many assumed the film's R-rating would exclude younger moviegoers, and therefore negatively affect the box office. But quite the opposite happened, with Fox repeating the same level of success with the recent sequel Deadpool 2.

The X-Men franchise continued to explore new ground with James Mangold's Logan. Hugh Jackman's final performance as Wolverine was surprisingly personal and muted-- a far cry from the massive action movies like X-Men: Apocalypse. R-ratings allow for more types of storytelling, action, and dialogue-- and now it seems that DC will try to get in on the action with Birds of Prey.

Birds of Prey is currently set to arrive in theaters on February 7th, 2020-- one of the few DC movies to have a concrete release date. The next installment in the DCEU is Aquaman on December 21, 2018. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your trips to the movies in 2019.

But how much does the movie need to make to start pulling in a profit for Fox? We explore below. In addition to the $27.8 million Alita: Battle Angel has landed this weekend, in the U.S. it's actually a long weekend thanks to the President's Day holiday landing on Monday.
